“No smoking, no fussing, no one under 21 at the bar, no cell phones, seriously! Please wipe your feet. Keep your kids in check, yo.” These are the house rules in Dr. Ho’s Humble Pie, the best pizza place in Charlottesville (according to local C-VILLE magazine), located in North Garden, a 17 minute drive from downtown.
Hand tossed, homemade dough is topped with locally sourced fresh ingredients, cooked in their seasoned, 15-year-old oven and then sliced into six pieces. Dr. Ho’s signature ingredient just might be the water used to make the dough, which comes from a private well nearby.
“Simple honest food” is the philosophy of chef and owner Michael McCarthy, “because food does not have to be complicated to be good,” he insists. The “Bellissima” pizza steals the show at Dr. Ho’s, topped with local country ham and fresh arugula that’s dressed in a zesty lemon vinaigrette, a perfect combination with their delicious crispy crust. There are many more specialty pies on the menu as well as the option to build your own. And don’t miss the crowd-pleasing “Fat & Sassy” Garlic Bread, Nachos or Fried Calamari. If you’re not sure where to start, ask the delightful manager, Naomi.
The old, familiar atmosphere at Dr. Ho’s Humble Pie is warm and welcoming, so it’s no wonder that it’s always full of pizza-lovers. Close your eyes, sink your teeth into a slice and you’ll feel it. It’s that coveted New York pizza feeling.
