This is a “made with love” bakery that everybody would want to have on their street or to stumble upon when visiting from abroad.
They serve breakfast, brunch, lunch, coffee, and baked goods including fresh bread. Behind the counter there is a sign that reads in French “vive le gluten.”
MarieBette was conceived by Jason Becton & Patrick Evans who first met at the International Culinary Center in New York City. MarieBette is named after their daughters, Marian and Betty. They travelled and learned from great chefs in New York and Spain and then decided to come back to Charlottesville to set up their bakery, a truly charming place.
The kitchen is open all day but the place is bustling from 11-1 p.m. when most people come for lunch or brunch on the weekends. The most popular dishes are the juicy Quiche Lorraine, the Kale Salad, Croque Madame and LaFayette sandwich. Also the baked eggs, served in cast iron pans, and stuffed French toast are very popular among brunch goers. A personal preference: the incredibly fluffy lemon Ricotta Pancakes.
Locally sourced ingredients and simple but well executed preparations fill the MarieBette menu. Give it a try!
